Implementing a Transition
Your efforts in picking up litter from the beach can have an immediate impact on the surrounding environment and contribute towards future environmental campaigns. The Marine Conservation Society will use the data collected from the 100m stretch of beach to create a database, which will be used to advocate for change. The results from previous beach clean-ups, such as the 5p bag charge campaign, have yielded an impressive 55% reduction in plastic bags found on beaches. These initiatives highlight the importance of individual efforts in protecting the environment and are a good way for you to spend your volunteer days.
Engaging Group Activities – Enjoyable for Everyone!
Assisting a worthy cause can be fun-filled, and the same goes for litter picking. You can make litter picking an exciting task by listening to interesting podcasts or playlists with a pair of headphones. In case you prefer group activities, team up with some like-minded friends for an enjoyable time while cleaning up the environment.
Families could make a day of it and get the kids involved, this can teach them to become more aware of littering and the environment around them whilst making it a fun day out together (please make sure to fill out a consent form for those who are under 16 when signing up!).
Assisting Marine Creatures
During last year’s beach cleanups, it was found that 30% of the litter collected was comprised of PPE and face masks. Although these items were critical in protecting human life, they have now become a source of single-use plastic waste, which is causing harm to marine animals and polluting the oceans and waterways. Removing litter from the beach can save wildlife from choking or getting entangled, and this action can potentially save their lives by preventing the harmful effects of plastic waste on marine life.
Maintaining the Hygiene of Beaches to Ensure Safety for All
By keeping the beaches clean, you not only aid in preserving marine life but also create a safe environment for all to relish. Non-humans such as dogs, foxes, and children won’t be inclined to pick up unknown rubbish and consume, bite, or play with it. While animals and small children may not be able to differentiate between harmful and harmless litter, however, if left unmonitored for a short time, there is a sense of security that they aren’t diving into the sand and picking up inappropriate items like bottle caps, wooden cutlery, and plastic bags.
The Sight of a Clean Beach Is Visually Appealing
When viewing or photographing a beach, its cleanliness can greatly impact one’s experience. A pleasant beach experience typically involves the sight of soft, sandy shores and crystal-clear blue waters, while a beach littered with piles of trash can be rather unsightly. Consequently, it is important for beaches to remain clean and free of debris.
